The Loft Is a Mechanical Structure
Hollow fiber does not stay lofty because it is simply “soft.” In a pillow or down-alternative comforter, short synthetic staple fibers are bent, crimped, and layered so they resist lying flat. Air occupies the spaces between them. Moisture lets fibers slide against one another, while pressure pushes the crimp toward a flatter shape. If the item is handled wet, packed tightly, or left under a body for hours before drying, individual fibers can migrate into small knots. Those knots feel dense, and the surrounding areas feel empty.

Agitation can separate a loose knot, but it cannot reliably recreate a fiber’s original curl after the material has flattened or fused with residue. When More Drying Will Not Help
Give up on restoration when the item is fully dry but still has hard, immovable lumps, large empty zones, or a permanently thin center after repeated label-compliant agitation. A comforter that has lost fill from one section may also have damaged internal barriers, allowing migration to return. Continuing to heat it can shrink or weaken the shell without restoring loft. Persistent odor, mildew-like spotting, singed fabric, broken stitching, or exposed filling are reasons to retire it rather than keep cycling it.
